Does your computer have to run the newest version of Windows? No.

Can your computer run the newest version of a different operating system? Yes!

But stop. What even is an operating system? Most people don't even know that much, and Microsoft tells them that Windows is the operating system. But the truth is that Windows is an operating system.

Operating system. That term sounds so technical, so intimidating. But all it is, really, is the way you talk to your computer's hardware. It's often made colorful, and friendly, and "easy," and the programs you use are written in a language that your operating system understands. Windows, Mac, and Linux are the three most prevalent operating systems.

Microsoft says you must upgrade to their latest operating system (Windows 11) even if your computer is a 2008–2017 model that can't upgrade. So the only answer is, "Your machine is obsolete. Buy a new one."

But get this: even though you can't install Windows 11, you probably can install version 22.3 of a different operating system.

It's time to talk about Linux. To be fair, talking about Linux is likely to just frustrate many users. It would be better to show them Linux.
